The Awesomeness of Auto-Tune

Auto-Tune first made its way into the public consciousness way back in 1998, when Cher’s voice was electronically modulated in her hit dance tune, “Believe.” Since then, the software has been used by everyone from Natasha Bedingfield to Green Day. And, oh yeah, T-Pain, whose excessive use of Auto-Tuning was (self)-mocked in one of my favorite digital shorts to ever spring from the loins of SNL.

Soon, though, the cat was out of the bag, and Ordinary Joes realized that they, too, could could have flawless (if somewhat robotic) singing voices using Auto-Tune. While some have just posted videos of themselves perfectly mimicking their favorite singers, others have gotten a bit more creative.

So far, my favorite comes from The Gregory Brothers, who produce a round-up of Auto-Tuned (and hilarious) news clips every few weeks. The most recent edition is kind of amazing:

Not to be outdone, DJ Steve Porter has Auto-Tuned some of history’s most famous press conferences. Predictably, Allen Iverson steals the show:
